POPULAR TRADITION SINCE 1997
We try to travel with fantasy back in time: we are in the 50s and the population of Matera, mostly made up of peasants, lives mostly in caves dug into the tuff. Many families live in precarious hygiene conditions, in the company of the animals with whom they share the working day.
Palmiro Togliatti, visiting Matera in 1948, called the Sassi “National Shame” and four years later (May 17) the “Special Law for the displacement of the Sassi” was issued. After fifty years the Sassi districts were still hibernated in their state of abandonment. The Morgan Restaurant was founded as Pub Brewery in 1997 as the first activity to settle in the area.
